Shopping Presenters must:

  • Deliver entertaining, informative, and persuasive presentations
  • Use every opportunity possible to network on the ship and in ports of call
  • Speak and write English fluently (other languages are a plus)
  • Appear polished and professional at all times
  • Create new promotional ideas to generate traffic and revenue
  • Achieve set targets for each promoted store
  • Multi-task and balance responsibilities

Your role onboard will be to encourage and educate cruise ship guests about the fantastic shopping ashore, while also saving them valuable time and money in the ports of call.

One of your most important selling and promoting tools will be the Recommended & Guaranteed Shopping Maps that you will distribute, explain, and promote during your presentations and guest satisfaction hours on board. This map is produced by PPI Group and highlights each of the stores in the ports of call that participate in the cruise line’s Port Shopping Program, listing the key items and special offers available in these stores.

The Port & Shopping Presenter will meet with the store managers, owners, or marketing representatives to discuss sales, ongoing and future promotions, and to brainstorm strategies to increase foot traffic and revenue for future port calls.

Below are some key bullet points outlining the main aspects of working as a Port & Shopping Presenter.

Live Port & Shopping Presentations

Create shoreside shopping excitement

Audiences size up to 1,000 guests

45 minutes to one hour in length

One to three presentations are given per cruise

Guest Satisfaction Desk Hours

Distribute shopping maps, VIP cards

Socializing Aboard the Ship

Build and maintain relationships with shoreside partners

Visit every partner on the Shopping Program (up to 50 stores per port)

Assist cruise ship guests with purchases and questions

Programs used include Microsoft Office and general email programs

In order to apply to The PPI Group, you will need to submit the following:

Explain why you are interested in the position, and the reasons you believe that you are well-suited to be a Port & Shopping Presenter. Please include your earliest available date for training and work.

3.  Audition Video 

Please prepare a five-minute audition video. Introduce yourself and give a brief description of why you should be considered as a potential Port & Shopping Presenter. Then “sell” us a product. The majority of your video should focus on your ability to sell. Sample items include, but are not limited to:

    1. Lipstick
    2. Manolo Blahnik shoes
    3. Rum cakes
    4. Turkish rugs
    5. Diamonds or gemstones
    6. Camera or other electronics

Tips for preparing an effective audition video:

  • Your presentation style should be entertaining, informative, and persuasive. Showcase your public-speaking and sales abilities. Remember, you are applying for a sales position.
  • Pretend you are speaking to a room of cruise ship guests.
  • Let your personality shine through, as well as your ability to motivate and excite people to shop.
  • Convey confidence, approachability, and credibility.
  • Look the part (a suit is recommended).
  • We will not base our decisions on the production quality of your audition video (it is not required to be professionally recorded and edited). Our focus is not on content of the video, but more importantly on the quality of your personal presentation skills.

Note: The PPI Group does accept couples for consideration. You may apply as a team, but we expect both parties to be equally as effective with regards to public-speaking and sales abilities. Please include resumes for both individuals. You may send individual audition tapes or a combined audition tape. Once reviewed, and if chosen for employment, your ship placements will be limited and there will be some additional costs incurred as a result of having an extra person on board. In addition, The PPI Group will expect you to work on separate ships if necessary when asked.

The PPI Group takes great pride in our comprehensive training program. The training program is held at our offices in Fort Lauderdale with a possible ship visit. The duration

of the training class is approximately five days.

You will be trained on:

  • Policy and procedure
  • Sales techniques
  • Product information
  • Ship protocol
  • Paperwork and administration

The Port & Shopping Presenter is responsible for airfare/transportation to training in

Fort Lauderdale. The PPI Group provides hotel accommodations and selected meals

during training.

Training participants will be assessed through:

  • Live presentations
  • Written tests
  • Interaction with office personnel and other training participants

Following office training and prior to beginning a ship assignment, the Port & Shopping Presenter will sail aboard a ship for 1 or 2 cruises to shadow the previous presenter, or to train with one of The PPI Group’s office staff.

Compensation

  • Port & Shopping Presenters are paid a weekly base salary plus generous commissions based on achieved sales targets. Earning potential is unlimited.

Contracts

  • Port & Shopping Presenters are independent contractors

Requirements to Sign on Board

  • Valid passport
  • C1/D Seaman’s Visa for Non-U.S. and non-Canadian citizens, Seaman’s Book (if required); cost to be reimbursed by PPI
  • $1,000 cash available and/or a valid credit card (in the event money is needed to cover incidental expenses during the first few weeks of employment)
  • Complete cruise line physical (specific cruise lines forms provided by PPI Group)
  • Wardrobe of basic business attire and formal wear
  • Previous cruise line employees or concessionaires must obtain written consent from your company before leaving the previous position

Living Conditions

  • Single crew cabin accommodations
  • Cabins are generally compact, but comfortable
  • Room and board (including meals) is provided free of charge
  • Access to gyms, multiple dining options, laundry, and crew lounges

Recommended

  • Laptop computer capable of playing PowerPoint presentations, or Mac with Keynote capabilities
  • Video camera with memory stick and a tripod
